Bulletin – 09/11

Competitors in the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship crossed the Scottish border to compete in the only closed road rally on the British mainland, the Jim Clark Reivers Rally. The conditions were predominately dry with any showers blowing past quickly on the high winds.

For competitors in the SG Petch championship it was a rally of attrition, with few finishers. Taking his first maximum points score in the drivers championship was Hayden Bridge’s Mark I’Anson in his Mitsubishi Evo 8, co-driven by Ron Roughead. This was despite an off through the fence after the flying finish of the 2nd stage, and a 5th gear spin on the 5th stage. Taking maximum co-drivers points was Scotland based New Zealander Peter McLean who was competing on his first tarmac rally with David Newall in another Mitsubishi Evo 8. They had a clean run until the last stage where they experienced a 5th gear spin but suffered little damage, and only a 15 second time loss. The only other SG Petch Championship competitors to finish were Sian Beaty/Julianne Antrobus (Ford KA). This was their first time on the Jim Clark Rally and they started without completing the pre event recce, therefore after a cautious start they picked up their pace as the day progress, but were hindered on the later stages with a power steering failure.

The SG Petch ANECCC Championship competitors who weren’t so lucking included Michael Glendinning (Subaru Impreza) who retired after the 3rd stage with mechanical problems, when lying inside the top 10 overall. Chris Anderson/Chris Thirling (Ford Fiesta) were hoping for a repeat of their 2010 class win, going into the last stage they were on track to achieve their target, but a failed throttle sensor stopped them 4 miles from the finish. Andrew Irving/Ann Forster (Peugeot 205) where experiencing a lot of 1st on this rally, 1st rally together, 1st time on the Jim Clark, 1st time on pacenotes. After steadily increasing their pace they rolled out on the 6th stage, fortunately with no injuries. The championship contender who had the shortest rally was Mike Scimgour, this time co-driving David Conley in his Hillman Avenger; they retired on the 1st stage with engine problems.

After seven round the current points standings are:-
Drivers
Richard Cook 80 pts, Michael Glendinning 47 pts, Charlie Taylor 42 pts, Barry Lindsay 39 pts, Mark I’Anson 36 pts, Joanna Wickham and John Bainbridge 27 pts

Co-drivers.

Bulletin – 08/11

After four rallies in the forests the competitors in the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship returned to tarmac for the first time since the Jack Frost Stages at the beginning of January, on the roads of the Warcop Ranges for the Stobart Rail Pendragon Stages. The Pendragon Stages normally runs at the end of August but due to an army training exercise it had to move to the only alternative available date on the 22nd May. The weather was a tyre choice nightmare with short dry spells between heavy showers.

Taking their second 3rd place overall and maximum SG Petch points on consecutive rallies were Richard and Edwin Cook (Subaru Impreza). Like most competitors they were on the wrong tyres most of the day but had a clean run and steadily climbed from 9th overall after the first stage to their final finishing position of 3rd overall. One place behind the Cooks were the Lindsays, Barry and Michael, in their 1600cc Peugeot 106. Barry had a storming drive on stage one with fourth fastest overall, as the roads dried they dropped to 9th but in the later stages they pulled back up to 4th overall and a committed drive on the last stage, with a second fastest overall, which was two seconds faster than rally winner William Stobart in his Focus World Rally car, secured 4th overall and 2nd place SG Petch ANECCC points.

Alistair Hutchinson is usually found driving his gas powered Renault Clio but this weekend he changed sides to co-drive for Mark Thompson in his Peugeot 206 in a rally at Blyton on Saturday. After finishing that rally they made a phone call and got a very late entry for the Pendragon. With a clean run they finished 15th overall and 3rd in the 2000cc class, and Alistair has now scored points in both the drivers and co-drivers championship. Third placed SG Petch crew to finish were Dave Crozier/Graeme Rumney (Peugeot 205), running on forest tyres for most of the day as they didn’t have any tarmac wets didn’t stop them catching other cars. On one stage they caught the car in front but they wouldn’t let them pass, a gentle tap let them know that someone wanted passed, they moved over and let Dave passed, but in his excitement at getting passed he overshot the next corner, and he was repassed.

Other SG Petch ANECCC Championship finishers were two co-drivers competing with non championship registers drivers. Andrew Roughead had a fraught day with Peter Taylor in has new Renault Clio, twice ending up in ditches, luckily with no major damage. Going into the last stage Colin Tombs, co-driving Marcus Tinsley in his 1400 Peugeot 205, were leading the 1400cc class, but an off resulted in a stage maximum and they slipped to 3rd in class.

After six round the current points standings are:-
Drivers
Richard Cook 80 pts, Michael Glendinning 46 pts, Charlie Taylor 42 pts, Barry Lindsay 39 pts, Joanna Wickham and John Bainbridge 27 pts

Co-drivers.
Edwin Cook 80 pts, Steve Bielby 42 pts, Andrew Roughhead 41 pts, Michael Lindsay 37pts, St John Dykes 35 pts, and Caroline Lodge 28 pts

Next week the competitors head across the Scottish border for the only closed road rally in the championship, the Jim Clark Reivers Rally. Full details are available on the rally website www.jimclarkrally.com
