Bulletin – 13/11
For the 11th round of the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship competitors gathered on the Otterburn military ranges, for the third of three rallies on the ranges, the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Rally. The forecast was for dry weather, but the forecasters got it badly wrong with the day stating wet and only did it dry enough for the last stage for competitors to think about taking of their wet tyres.
Maximum SG Petch driver’s points were taken by Mark I’Anson in his Mitsubishi Evo 8 co-driven by Ron Roughead; they had a slow first couple of stages and were only the 4th placed ANECCC crew after the first two stages, in 18th overall. But an increase in pace over the day took them to 10th overall, and maximum points. Top co-drivers points went to Mike Scrimgour co-driving for David Conley in his 1600cc Hillman Avenger, who had a clean run, except for the odd spin, to win the 1600cc class. Second place ANECCC points went to Barry and Michael Lindsay (Peugeot 106), who had a quiet day and were not having their usual giant killing act, but they still finished 15th overall and 2nd in class. One place further back were Chris Anderson/Chris Thirling (Ford Fiesta) who thought the problems that put them out of last months Tyneside Stages on the last stage, had struck again when the car cut out on the 10th stage. But after 2 minutes it restarted, and ran faultless on the last stage to allow them to win the 2.0 ltr class and take 3rd place SG Petch ANECCC points.
The remaining SG Petch point scorers were led home by Colin Tombs who got a late call up to co-drive for Dave Seed (Ford Escort), they thought there day was finished when they spun off but fortunately there were enough marshals nearby to get them going again. Dave Crozier/Graeme Rumney (Peugeot 205) had only the option of slicks or forest tyres, so it had to be forest tyres, which worked surprisingly well. Until the 10th stage where an off resulted on the loss of their front wing and bumper, but it didn’t stop them getting to the finish. Josh Davison was co-driving for his father Michael this weekend in his Proton Satria, the day got of to a bad start when the car would not start after being taken of the trailer. An electrical problem was found just in time to make the start, and the car ran fault less the rest of the day. The next SG Petch finisher was Josh’s usual driver Joanna Wickham in here Subaru Impreza, who was co-driven this week by husband Guy. This was Joanna’s first outing on tarmac for a number of years and all was going well until the last stage when a close shave with a bale at a chicane left a nice black strip up the side of her yellow Impreza. The final SG Petch ANECCC finishers were the 1400cc cars of Andrew Irving/Ann Foster (Peugeot 205) and Sian Beaty/Dave Antrobus (Ford KA), Andrew and Ann were having their first outing since crashing on the Jim Clark Rally and gradually increased their pace to finish 3rd 1400cc car overall. Sian and Dave also had a clean run except for a slow puncture on one stage.
The non finishers among the SG Petch ANECCC competitors were Richard and Edwin Cook (Subaru Impreza) who were lying 6th overall and leading SG Petch crew after stage 9, which would have tied up the championship for them, but the gearbox stuck in gear on the 10th stage putting them out. Edwin still won the co-drivers championship because his only challenger, Andrew Roughead who was co-driving for Peter Taylor (Renault Clio) went off on stage 4 and retired. Reigning champion, Michael Glendinning’s run of bad luck continues with retirement on the 8th stage with gearbox problems when 1 second of the overall lead.
With two rounds to go the drivers championship can only be won by Richard Cook or Mark I’Anson. Richard only needs to finish one of the last two rounds to win, but Mark must take maximum championship points on both rounds with Richard not finishing to win. In addition to Richard and Mark the only other person that can finish second overall is Barry Lindsay. The top three will probably be filled by these three, but still in with a mathematical chance of finishing 3rd are Charlie Taylor and Michael Glendinning.
In the co-drivers championship Edwin Cook has sown this year’s championship up at the Cheviot, to win it for the 6th year running. There are still seven co-drivers still with a mathematical chance of finishing second.
After eleven round the current points standings are:-

Richard Cook 121 pts, Barry Lindsay 94 pts, Mark I’Anson 84 pts, Charlie Taylor 51 pts, Michael Glendinning 49 pts, and Alistair Hutchinson 43 pts.
Co-drivers.
Edwin Cook 121 pts, Michael Lindsay 79 pts, Andrew Roughead 776 pts, Caroline Lodge 56 pts, Steve Bielby 53 pts, and Josh Davison 48 pts.
It is now back to the forests for the Malton Forest Rally in the North Yorkshire forests on the 6th November, details available soon on the rally website www.maltonmc.co.uk
Then it is the final round, the Grizedale Stages Rally on the 26th/27th November, with scrutineering and a night stage on Saturday 26th, with six further stages on the Sunday, for full details see the rally website www.grizedalestages.co.uk

For the 10th round of the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship competitors gathered on the Otterburn military ranges, for the second of three rallies on the ranges, the Pirtek Tyneside Stages, conditions were changeable making tyre selection difficult.
For the 6th time this year maximum SG Petch ANECCC points were taken by Cumbria’s Richard and Edwin Cook (Subaru Impreza), not only did they take maximum points they had their first outright rally win, following on from a 2nd and two 3rd overalls on their last three outing. Current champion Michael Glendinning was leading by over a minute after four stages, but crashed out on the 5th, which means he can no longer win the 2011 ANECCC Championship. Second place co-drivers points were taken by Andrew Roughead, co-driving Peter Taylor (Renault Clio) who were leading after 8 stages, but a puncture on the 9th cost them 1 minute 40 seconds, but a charge over the last two stages pulled them back up to 2nd overall.
The next SG Petch finishing crew in 5th overall and winning their class were Barry and Michael Lindsay (Peugeot 106), who had there usual neat clean drive putting many more powerful cars to shame Next ANECCC finisher was Mike Scrimgour co-driving for David Conley in his 1600cc Hillman Avenger, who experienced no difficulties but enjoyed the afternoon stages better then the morning.
The remaining SG Petch ANECCC finishers were Geoff Harkness/Caroline Lodge (Vauxhall Corsa) despite their engine loosing water, but they couldn’t find where it was going. Sian Beaty (Ford KA) had a new co-driver in Robert Douglas on his first every rally; he enjoyed the rally as he gained experience with the pace notes, also the new cooler fitted to her power steering appeared to fix the steering problems experienced recently.
The non finishers among the SG Petch ANECCC competitors were Mark I’Anson/Ron Roughead (Mitsubishi Evo 
who slide off on the 2nd stage and were unable to regain the road. Chris Anderson/Chris Thirling (Ford Fiesta) after a couple of good finishes in recent rallies were in 5th overall at the start of the last stage but the engine cut out 1 mile into the last stage and wouldn’t restart. Michael and Josh Davison (Proton Compact) had the shortest rally of the day when their clutch failed after 6 miles.
Despite having scored 6 maximum points Richard and Edwin Cook have still not wrapped up the 2011 SG Petch ANECCC Stage Championship. Richard just needs to finish one more round to win the drivers, and Edwin needs a top 5 finish to secure the co-drivers championship

The last Otterburn rally of the year is the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Rally on the 23rd October; regulations are now available on the rally website www.cheviotstages.co.uk
