Bulletin – 15/11

The 13th and final round of the 2011 SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship was the Coppermines Grizedale Stages Rally, based at Coniston in the Lake District. To add a different twist to the rally the organisers ran one stage in the dark on the Saturday night, with a further six on Sunday. The conditions were very difficult on the Saturday with thick patchy fog covering the stage; the weather was much dryer on the Sunday, resulting in nearly perfect conditions.

For the second round running a driver collected maximum SG Petch points for the first time, Geoff Wilson (Ford Escort MkII) may have collected maximum points for the first time, but his co-driver for the day was six times ANECCC co-driving champion Edwin Cook, who took his seventh maximum points of the season. Like everyone they didn’t enjoy the fog on Saturday night, so took it steady through that stage, Sunday’s stages were enjoyed much more with no real issues. Second ANECCC finishers were Andrew Irving/Ann Forster (Peugeot 205) who had to stop on the second stage on Sunday morning to change a puncture, but when they stopped they found the puncture was due to the wheel splitting in two. After loosing nearly 4 minutes on that stage they rest off the rally ran with no problems, and Ann was pleased to see the finish of her first ever forest rally. The only other ANECCC starter in the main rally were David Crozier/Graeme Rumney (Peugeot 205), David had already secured the drivers award in the 1600cc class in the ANECCC Championship, but a finish was required for Graeme to win the 1600cc class co-drivers award. They were on course for the required finish with Graeme stating “David is driving steadier than usual” but their rally ended on the 6th stage.

Two other regular SG Petch ANECCC championship competitors were competing on the Sunday only stages, but to collect championship points that had to compete in the full rally. Sian Beaty/David Antrobus (Ford KA) were having their first outing in the forests since the Malcolm Wilson Rally in March. They found the early stages very slippy, but with the wind blowing the stages dried and they enjoyed the afternoon stages. Alistair Hutchinson/St John Dykes (Renault Clio) had another eventful rally with a driveshaft braking on the first stage, which they then had to drive slowly through the second before they could change it at service. This is the same driveshaft that failed on there last outing, at the Malton Forest Rally. At second service a wheel bearing had to be changed, but they made it back to the finish in Coniston.

Richard Cook 121 pts, Barry Lindsay 94 pts, Mark I’Anson 84 pts, Alistair Hutchinson and Joanna Wickham 53 pts and Charlie Taylor 52 pts.

Grizedale Stages 2008

The 2008 SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship season finished at a very cold but dry Grizedale Stages, but the low overnight temperature left slippy patches to catch the unwary.

The fastest SG Petch registered crew on the first stage were Alex Allingham/ Mark Glennerster (Subaru Impreza) who at first service reported the stages very slippy and were taking it steady but going to up the pace. They continued to head the registered competitors to the end, finishing 6th overall, but Mark didn’t get maximum co-drivers points as Richard Cooke had his first outing since the Border Counties in Mike O’Brien’s newly acquired Ford Focus 03 WRC, and they finished one place ahead in 5th overall.

The only SG Petch crew to retire were William Jarman/Mark Fisher (Escort Cosworth) who after a good start on stage 1 spun on stage 2 going backwards of the road causing substantial damage to the car, but despite their second retirement in a row retained 2nd place in the championship.

There was a close battle for 2nd between Geoff Wilson/Sean O’Neill (Ford Escort MkII) and Richard and Edwin Cook (Vauxhall Astra), Geoff was fastest on the first two stages, but Richard gradually hauled him in going ahead on the 5th, but on the last stage Richard hit a patch of very thick fog where he had to come to a complete stop, loosen his belts to look out the side window, before he could see where he was going, he lost 22 seconds allowing Geoff back ahead. John Bainbridge/ Giles Dykes (Subaru Impreza) were complaining of a lack of grip at first service, but a change to a different compound tyre worked wonders with much better grip reported at the finish.

The 1400’s were led home by Andrew and Reg Irving (Peugeot 205) who had 2 spins on the earlier stages, and a puncture near the finish of the last, Sian Beaty/Dave Antrobus (Ford KA) commented as most people did about how slippy the early stages were, but their biggest problem later on was the low sun which caused a few hairy moments. Last points scorer was Chris Purvis who was with his third different driver in the last 3 rounds, this time Stuart Wilson (Vauxhall Nova) had the pleasure.

This left the final points positions:-
Drivers Co Driver
Richard Cook – 107 pts Edwin Cook – 104 pts
William Jarman – 70 pts Mark Fisher – 70 pts
Barry Lindsay – 69 pts Michael Lindsay – 69 pts
Geoff Wilson – 58 pts Helen Hall – 57 pts
