For the 3rd time this year Otterburn hosted a round of the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship, the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Rally, unlike the previous two visits it was a wet day with heavy rain between the showers

For the 3rd time maximum points in the SG Petch Stage Rally Championship were taken by the rapid 1600cc Peugeot 106 of Barry and Michael Lindsay, they also were 1st 1600cc car home. It was a nervous day for the Lindsay’s as they were also trying to tie up the North of England Tarmac Championship for the 4th time, but they had a clean run and completed the final stage where they heard numerous rattles, bangs and creaks to get to the finish for maximum points in the North of England and again secure that title.  Second place SG Petch points and 1st in Group N were Mark I’Anson/Andrew Roughead (Mitsubishi Evo 8) who had a clean run just reporting the stages being very slippy. Mark and Matthew Thompson (Peugeot 206) had their best result of the year taking 3rd place SG Petch points, this was despite splitting a power steering hose on stage 8, which was repaired in service, but they had to top up the fluid before each stage, which resulted in very heavy steering for the last 4 stages. One place behind Mark and Matthew were Geoff Wilson/Alex Benn (Ford Escort MkII) who’s only problem was a broken exhaust on the 9th stage which made it difficult for Geoff to hear Alex’s pacenotes. The last SG Petch finisher were Sian Beaty/Simon Martin (Ford KA) who reported it were slippy early on but a cracked manifold lead to a loos in power on the later stages.

On a day of many retirements the current championship leaders Richard and Edwin Cook were back in their Vauxhall Astra but retired with a con rod through the block.

The UTS Rally team of Peter Gibson/Adam Bradford (Vauxhall Nova) were battling with the Lindsay’s for the North of England championship but a roll on the 1st stage ended their rally. Geoff Harkness/Caroline Lodge (Vauxhall Corsa) were having a clean run until a flat battery stopped them on the last loop of stages. Chris Rice/Giles Dykes (Subaru Impreza) retired with lost drive, and David Conley/Mike Scrimgour (Talbot Sunbeam) had a water pimp fail.

This result has made things closer at the top of the championship with 25 rounds remaining, the current championship standings are as follows:-

Drivers: - Richard Cook 93 points, Barry Lindsay 83 points, Charlie Taylor 53, Geoff Wilson 52 points, William Jarman and Mark Thompson on 45 points.

Co-Drivers: - Edwin Cook 91 points, Michael Lindsay 81 points, Steve Bielby 57 points, Giles Dykes and Adam Bradford tied on 51 points, Matthew Thompson 49 pts.
