The Greystoke Stages joined the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship for the first time after a successful first running in 2008; it is the only single venue forest rally in the championship.
After a number of warm dry days competitors were met by a grey misty damp Greystoke forest which left the stages with a layer of mud on top making the early stages very slippy. After two DNF’s in their Vauxhall Astra on their last two rallies a return to their Subaru Impreza brought a change in fortune for Richard and Edwin Cook, who despite a loss of 10 seconds on the 2nd stage with a puncture took their 4th maximum points of the year with 4th place overall. Fastest ANECCC competitor on the 1st stage had been William Jarman/Mark Fisher (Escort Cosworth), but they got out of shape under braking on the second stage and slide down a bank which they couldn’t get out off. 2nd place ANECCC points had been a close battle all day with the position finally going to Mark I’Anson/Ron Roughead (Mitsubishi Evo
on their 2nd championship appearance, Mark was concerned by the diff warning light coming on near the end of each stage, but after everything had cooled down it was OK for the next stage. 3rd place points went to Charlie Taylor/Steve Bielby (Escort MkII) in 8th place overall, they reported no problems apart from the slippy early stages. 10th overall and 4th place ANECCC points went to Geoff Wilson/Sean O’Neill (Escort MkII) who had a major scare on the first stage when a drinks bottle came loss and got wedged under the brake pedal, but Geoff managed to remove it without any damage being caused. John Bainbridge/Giles Dykes (Subaru Impreza) had their best result of the year with 12th overall and 5th place ANECCC points, that had a scare when the car got out off shape on a jump on the 6th stage, and decided to take it a bit easier over this jump on the next stage. Peter Thornton/Alexander McNeice (Subaru Impreza) had a very eventful day, they were inside the top 10 after 3 stages but lost 30 seconds with a spin and stall on stage 4, lost over a minute with a broken front driveshaft on stage 5, and a further 15 seconds with a broken rear driveshaft on the last stage, they eventually finished 16th overall with 6th placed ANECC points. In the 1400cc class 1st and 2nd in class Andrew Benn/Malcolm Irving (Vauxhall Astra) and Sian Beaty/Julianne Antrobus (Ford KA) had an enjoyable rally with no major problems to report. Maximum co-drivers points in the 1400cc class went to Adam Bradford who won the class beside the unregistered Garry Johnson, Adams main problem was that they were in the 1400 and not the 1600 class which he normally competes in.
With William Jarman/Mark Fisher retiring for the 2nd rally running Charlie Taylor/Steve Bielby have now moved up to second behind Richard and Edwin Cook, the current championship standings half way through the season as follows:-
Drivers: - Richard Cook 88 points, Charlie Taylor 53, William Jarman 45 points, points, Geoff Wilson 40 points, and Barry Lindsay 28 points.
Co-Drivers: - Edwin Cook 86 points, Steve Bielby 57 points, Mark Fisher 47 points, Giles Dykes and Sean O’Neill tied on 44 points.
There is now a break in the championship until the Stobart Rail Pendragon Stages on 30th August, this year with a re-route in Warcop an extra 10 miles have been found, combined with a spectator stage a Lowther Park the organizers now have 14 stages covering 80 miles. The entry fee is £275 and with this event being a round of numerous championships entries will fill up quickly, there is a maximum of 120 starters. Regulations are available at www.pendragonstages.
It is then back to Otterburn, following a 1 year absence from the ranges, Tynemouth and District Motor Club are proud to announce the return of the E.W. Motor Services Lindisfarne Rally!
