Bulletin – 05/11
For the 3rd rally in 5 weeks the competitors in the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship headed north across the border to Jedburgh for the Brick and Steel Border Counties Rally. For this rally most of the stages were south of the border in the Keilder forest complex, the rally only included 4 stages, but one of them was over 17 miles long.
Following on from getting maximum points on the last championship round, the Malcolm Wilson Rally, Richard and Edwin Cook (Subaru Impreza) took their second maximum SG Petch championship points of the season. They had a clean run with no major problems, and reported the stages were in excellent condition, but commented that they had to concentrate on the road surface, because of the constantly changing grip levels. Second place co-drivers points went to Peter McLean who this week was with David Newall (Mitsubishi Evo
who had a good run to finish in the top 20 overall. Third place co-drivers points went to Andrew Roughead who this week was with Peter Taylor (Ford Fiesta R2) they had an excellent run to win the 1600cc class. Next SG Petch ANECCC finisher was Andrew’s usual driver Michael Glendinning who this week was using his Mk II Escort instead of his usual Subaru Impreza. Michael and co-driver Jo Emma Hind had an interesting first couple of stages when the rear brakes failed, but with the brakes restored to all four wheels after service they enjoyed the last two stages much more. The fifth SG Petch finishers were the tarmac experts Barry and Michael Lindsay (Peugeot106) making one of their rare forest appearances; despite their lack of gravel practise they finish a very creditable 37th out of the 105 starters. The final SG Petch finishers were Joanna Wickham/Josh Davison (Subaru Impreza), who after loosing time with an off on the long second stage made it safely back to the finish.
A number of SG Petch ANECCC competitors retired on the rally, first to fall by the wayside were Phil Jobson/Jerry Hettrick (Ford Escort) who failed to make it out of the second stage. On stage three John Bainbridge/Andrew Roughead (Subaru Impreza) slide into a ditch and rolled, landing back on their wheels the hot exhaust set fire to the heather, and they had to borrow an extinguisher for a following competitor to put the fire out. Although Simon Moore/Emma Morrison (Renault Clio) made it to the finish they were over their maximum lateness due to the amount of time they lost on the second stage when they lost a wheel.
After four round the current points standings are:-
Drivers
Richard Cook 40 pts, Michael Glendinning 36 pts, Charlie Taylor 30 pts, Joanna Wickham and Barry Lindsay 24 pts and Simon Moore on 21 pts.
Co-drivers.

Bulletin – 04/11
The Lake District forests were the next port of call for the competitors in the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship, when they took part in the Malcolm Wilson Rally. They were greeted with stages in a much more enjoyable condition than last years snow and ice, competitors praised the condition of the stages but they reported that the first couple of stages were very slippy.
After losing out in the battle for the 2010 championship, 2009 champions Richard and Edwin Cook (Subaru Impreza) started their challenge to regain the championship with maximum points, in 10th place overall. They had a clean run all day with only an intermittent intercom causing them any trouble. Second place SG Petch ANECCC points went to the historic specification Ford Escort of Charlie Taylor and Steve Bielby, as with most competitors the slippy early stages were their only difficulty, but it didn’t slow them down and the finished first historic car home. Second historic car to finish was the MkII Escort of Warren Philliskirk who this week was navigated by the SG Petch championship registered co-driver, Matt Whattam, despite pushing all day they couldn’t quite catch Charlie. Third place registered crew were the Barnard Castle team of John Bainbridge/St John Dykes (Subaru Impreza), it was only at the arrival of the first stage did they find out that St John’s helmet intercom plug did not match that the plug in the car. The only way they could communicate was to have the road head set round his neck with the mike somewhere near his mouth, which caused some intermittent communications. Only 6 seconds behind John were the 4th place ANECCC crew of Geoff Wilson/Sean O’Neill (Ford Escort), who were having their first event since blowing their engine on last Augusts Pendragon Stages, and their first time in the forests since last years Malcolm Wilson. The only problem they had to overcome was a loose starter motor, which was easily fixed.
There then followed a very close battle for the 1600cc class with three crews covered by six seconds. At the finish the battle was won by historic specification Ford Escort MkI of Neil Rudd and Brian Hodgson, who after having the exhaust fall off on the Riponian, had the manifold break today, but a quick call home to Carlisle and a replacement was available at service. Two seconds behind were Dave Crozier/Graeme Rumney (Peugeot 205) who didn’t appear to be slowed when they lost their brakes on the second stage when a brake pipe burst. Third in this battle were Phil and Caroline Jobson (Ford Escort) who experienced gear selection problems, causing Phil some pain due to a blister on his had.
The remaining SG Petch ANECCC finishers were Joanna Wickham/Josh Davison (Subaru Impreza) who enjoyed the stages much better than the snow covered ones on the Riponian. Sian Beaty/Simon Martin (Ford KA) also enjoyed a clean run with no reported problems. Caroline Lodge is the only person to compete on all of the first three rounds of the championship, with three different drivers, this week she was co-driving David Edwards (Vauxhall Astra), who was experiencing difficulties in selecting second gear, but these were rectified at final service.
Of the unfortunate competitors that failed to finish worst affect were current champions Michael Glendinning/Andrew Roughhead (Subaru Impreza) who rolled into a ditch on the first stage, they headed home to start fixing the car is they have an entry in the Tour of Eypnt Rally next weekend. Making a return to rallying after his illness was Andrew Irving, co-driven by his father Reg, they had a good run on the first two stages but stopped with car troubles on the 3rd. Also on the retirement list were Nigel Feeney/Peter McLean (Subaru Impreza) who retired on stage 5 with gearbox problems.
After three round the current points standings are:-
Drivers
Charlie Taylor 30 pts, Michael Glendinning 21 pts, Simon Moore, Neil Rudd and Richard Cook 20 pts, and John Bainbridge on 18 pts.
Co-drivers.
Steve Bielby 30 pts, St John Dykes 25 pts, Andrew Roughhead 21 pts, Janice Moore, Matt Whattam and Edwin Cook on 20 pts.
