Bulletin - 16/09

The 2009 SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship came to a conclusion at the Grizedale Stages on Saturday 5th December, and for the 3rd year running it finished with Richard and Edwin Cook (Vauxhall Astra) being declared champions.

It was far from easy for the Cooks with their Impreza still not repaired from its off on the Lindisfarne Rally, and their Astra minus an engine after it blew up on the Keith Knox Rally, it was only through the generosity of Sean O’Neill who lent them his car that they were able to make the start. So it was a steady run all day with no problems to make it to the finish as 3rd ANECCC crew, and 1st in the 2000cc class. Keeping them honest were Barry and Michael Lindsay (Peugeot 106) who were on their first forest rally since the 2008 Border Counties Rally, they took it steady over the first four stage waiting for the Cooks to slip up, but as they hadn’t they pushed on the last two stages to take 1st in the 1600cc class, 4th ANECCC crew and 2nd overall in the 2009 SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship. Top ANECCC finishers for the first time this year were Geoff Wilson/Sean O’Neill (Escort MkII) which allowed Geoff to take 3rd place driver in the ANECCC championship, from a non starting Charlie Taylor.

Charlie’s regular co-driver Steve Bielby got a late call up to sit in with Steve Magson in his historic Opel Ascona allowing him enough points to retain 3rd place in the championship.

2nd place ANECCC points went to Nick Woodman/Simon Mills who hired the historic MkII Escort that Kris Meeke used on the 2008 Colin McRae Stages, a good run allowed them to collect the 1st placed historic 2000cc competitors’ award. Nick Woodman’s usual co-driver, Alex Benn, got top place ANECCC co-drivers points but this week was competing with the un-registered Phillip Lilley in his Metro 6R4. 2nd placed ANECCC co-drivers points went to another co-driver who was not competing with his usual driver, Jon Riley was co-driving for Simon Singleton (Subaru Impreza) who was competing in his first multi venue stage rally, and they were very pleased with 13th overall. John Bainbridge/Giles Dykes (Subaru Impreza) were in line to finish as 2nd place ANECCC crew but an off on the last stage cost them over 1 minute and dropped them to 5th placed crew.  Dave and Steve Nicholson (Mitsubishi Evo 4) were also in the hunt for a top finish but a 3 minute road penalty dropped them down the order; this was a particularly good performance as this was Dave’s first outing in a 4WD car which he had just finished building in his back garden.

The 1400cc class had a good battle not only on the rally but for the 2009 SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship class 1 award. It finished with Martin Breen (Peugeot 106) taking maximum points and the class championship, despite being off the road for 2 minutes on the last stage, Martin was co-driven by stand in Nicola Smith, as his usual co-driver Simon Graham was unable to compete due to a back injury, Martin says this is his last rally, time will tell. 2nd in class 1 were Andrew and Reg Irving (Peugeot 205) despite finishing the rally stuck in 2nd gear. 3rd place class 1 competitor was also a walking wounded, Sian Beaty/Julianne Antrobus (Ford KA), which after a puncture on stage 5, misfired its way through stage 6 only just making it to the finish. Leaving 2nd service Andrew Benn (Vauxhall Astra) just had to finish to take the class 1 championship award, but the car stopped on the 5th stage dropping him to 2nd in the championship.

These results left the final championship points standings as follows:-

Drivers: - Richard Cook 104 points, Barry Lindsay 93 points, Geoff Wilson 70 points, Charlie Taylor 65, William Jarman and Mark Thompson on 45 points.

Co-Drivers: - Edwin Cook 98 points, Michael Lindsay 87 points, Steve Bielby 79 points, Giles Dykes 64 points, Sean O’Neill60 points, and Jon Riley 56 points.

Awards Night for the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship on the 8th December, at The Golden Fleece Inn, Ruleholme, Nr Carlise, CA6 4NF, starting at 8.30pm. This will be run in conjunction with the Motor Club Social Evening being run by Spadeadam Motor Club. There have been two of these Social Evenings this year and both have been well supported and very enjoyable, so everyone is invited competitors, service crews, marshals and officals.

Details of the 2010 ANECCC Stage Rally Championship will be published soon, but I can confirm that the first round will be the Cartersport Jack Frost Stages at Croft on 17th January. Regulations are available at www.darlington-motor-club.org.uk
