After a wet Otterburn for the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Rally it was an even wetter Pickering Showgrounds that greeted the competitors for the Malton Forest Rally, the penultimate round of the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship.

For the second time this year the highest placed SG Petch Stage Rally Championship competitor was Gary Cooper/Jon Riley (Subaru Impreza) with 5th overall, apart for a few scares with the standing water they had a clean run, and were pleased to get home with the car intact after inflicting substantial damage to it on last years Malton Forest Rally.  One place behind Gary and Jon were Jeff McNeil/Fred Roberts (Subaru Impreza) who also had a relatively incident free rally. 3rd placed ANECCC crew were Charlie Taylor/Steve Bielby (Ford Escort MkII) in 8th place overall, they were hampered on the first two stages when they couldn’t select 5th gear, due to a pre-rally assembly problem, with this fixed in service the only other problem they encountered was catching a car on the last stage, but this didn’t cost a lot of time. 4th place points scorers were John Bainbridge/Giles Dykes (Subaru Impreza), who had a spin on the 2nd stage when braking for a hairpin bend, then a picture 3 miles from the end of the last stage also cost some time. The last ANECCC finishers were Martin Breen/Simon Graham who brought their 1300cc Peugeot 106 from west Cumbria to experience the Yorkshire forests for the first time. On the first loop of stages the main problem was the amount of water on the road sections, they had to stop at one point was the wipers couldn’t cope. On the second loop a rear shock absorber bolt fell out, this was fixed at service and they made it home safely.

None finishers included Jim McNeil/ Mike Scrimgour (Subaru Impreza) who were in a close group of 4 dicing for the win on the last stage, but a turbo failure caused their retirement. Amanda and Derek Cornforth (Ford KA) were having a clean run only loosing time when they caught another competitor, but they stopped on the last stage with engine problems.

Following the Malton Forest Stages the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship goes down to the last round where the championship will be decided between Richard and Edwin Cook and Barry and Michael Lindsay, the current championship standings are as follows:-
