For the 3rd time this year Otterburn hosted a round of the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship, the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Rally, unlike the previous two visits it was a wet day with heavy rain between the showers
For the 3rd time maximum points in the SG Petch Stage Rally Championship were taken by the rapid 1600cc Peugeot 106 of Barry and Michael Lindsay, they also were 1st 1600cc car home. It was a nervous day for the Lindsay’s as they were also trying to tie up the North of England Tarmac Championship for the 4th time, but they had a clean run and completed the final stage where they heard numerous rattles, bangs and creaks to get to the finish for maximum points in the North of England and again secure that title. Second place SG Petch points and 1st in Group N were Mark I’Anson/Andrew Roughead (Mitsubishi Evo
who had a clean run just reporting the stages being very slippy. Mark and Matthew Thompson (Peugeot 206) had their best result of the year taking 3rd place SG Petch points, this was despite splitting a power steering hose on stage 8, which was repaired in service, but they had to top up the fluid before each stage, which resulted in very heavy steering for the last 4 stages. One place behind Mark and Matthew were Geoff Wilson/Alex Benn (Ford Escort MkII) who’s only problem was a broken exhaust on the 9th stage which made it difficult for Geoff to hear Alex’s pacenotes. The last SG Petch finisher were Sian Beaty/Simon Martin (Ford KA) who reported it were slippy early on but a cracked manifold lead to a loos in power on the later stages.
On a day of many retirements the current championship leaders Richard and Edwin Cook were back in their Vauxhall Astra but retired with a con rod through the block.
The UTS Rally team of Peter Gibson/Adam Bradford (Vauxhall Nova) were battling with the Lindsay’s for the North of England championship but a roll on the 1st stage ended their rally. Geoff Harkness/Caroline Lodge (Vauxhall Corsa) were having a clean run until a flat battery stopped them on the last loop of stages. Chris Rice/Giles Dykes (Subaru Impreza) retired with lost drive, and David Conley/Mike Scrimgour (Talbot Sunbeam) had a water pimp fail.
This result has made things closer at the top of the championship with 25 rounds remaining, the current championship standings are as follows:-
Drivers: - Richard Cook 93 points, Barry Lindsay 83 points, Charlie Taylor 53, Geoff Wilson 52 points, William Jarman and Mark Thompson on 45 points.
Co-Drivers: - Edwin Cook 91 points, Michael Lindsay 81 points, Steve Bielby 57 points, Giles Dykes and Adam Bradford tied on 51 points, Matthew Thompson 49 pts.

Bulletin – 12/09
It was back to the Otterburn Military Ranges for the second time this year for the 7th round of the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship for the Lindisfarne Rally. A dry but overcast day greeted the crews which was a change from the uncharacteristic high temperatures and clear blue sky on Saturday’s reece.
As with the last round on Otterburn, the Tyneside Stages, maximum points were taken by the rapid 1600cc Peugeot 106 of Barry and Michael Lindsay, the only problem they had all day was an inoperable starter motor which meant they had to jump start the car all day, so extra care was taken on the stages not to stall. Second placed driver’s points were taken by Alan Hughes in his historic specification MkII Escort who reported no problems, Alan was a late entry on the Lindisfarne Rally and was co-driven by Andrew Roughead as his usual co-driver Mike Scrimgour had already got a seat with Andy Knight. Andy Knight was using the Lindisfarne Rally as a test for the up and coming Tour of Mull on which he was making a return after a 10 year absence from rallying, Mike help guide him to 18th overall and 1st 1400cc car. 3rd placed ANECCC crew was the UTS Rally team of Peter Gibson/Adam Bradford (Vauxhall Nova) who had a steady run to 25th overall and 4th 1600cc car. 4th placed points were taken by Mark and Matthew Thompson (Peugeot 206), with the wife and husband team of Tracey Louise and Garry Muir (Peugeot 106) getting their first points of the year. Last SG Petch ANECCC crew to finish were Andrew Benn/Giles Dykes (Vauxhall Astra), Andrew was competing on Otterburn for the first time and was going well until and last stage off resulted in a stage maximum.
Championship leaders Richard and Edwin Cook (Subaru Impreza) were in 5th place overall starting the last stage but an off meant they failed to finished. Other retirements were Kev Monaghan/Chris Purvis (Vauxhall Corsa) who had a piston through the side of the engine, and Michael Davison (Proton Compact) with first time co-driver Peter Littlefield whose gearbox failed on the last stage.
This result has moved Barry and Michael Lindsay up to second in the championship pushing Charlie Taylor/Steve Bielby back to 3rd , the current championship standings are as follows:-
Drivers: - Richard Cook 93 points, Barry Lindsay 63 points, Charlie Taylor 53, William Jarman 45 points, and Geoff Wilson 42 points.
Co-Drivers: - Edwin Cook 91 points, Michael Lindsay 61 points, Steve Bielby 57 points, Giles Dykes and Adam Bradford tied on 50 points.
It back again to Otterburn for the last tarmac round of the championship, the UTS Cheviot Keith Knox Rally on 25th October. The route will consist of approximately 10 special stages, with stage miles totalling around 100 for £300, Regulations are available at www.cheviotstages.co.uk
The week after the Keith Knox Rally, on 1st November, it is back to the forests for the Malton Forest Rally in the North Yorkshire forests, regs will be available soon at www.maltonmc.co.uk
