With the unfortunate cancellation of the Riponian Rally we have lost the second round of the 2009 S G Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship. The Riponian was cancelled on Friday afternoon when the Forestry Commission judged the stages were not in a safe condition, and refused permission for the rally to enter the forests, therefore the organisers had no option but to cancel. It seems a very harsh decision by the Forestry Commision considering the Wyedean and Snowman rallies have taken place in areas which were worse affected by the weather than Yorkshire. It is very disappointing for the organisers, after all their hard work, and not a little expense, to have the event cancelled at the last minute in this way.
The organisers have released the following statement:-
“We have decided, to make every effort possible to reschedule the event within the next two months, and hope to make a formal announcement on when the event will take place by the end of next week. “
Regulations for the 3rd round, the Malcolm Wilson Rally in the Lake District forest on the 7th March are available at www.malcolmwilson.co.uk The rally is based in Cockermouth with scrutineering held at M-Sport, there are 7 stages covering 43 miles of classic forest stages.
The Regulations for round 4, the Border Counties Rally on the 21st March in Keilder forest are also available on the rally website www.bordercountiesrally.co.uk
This year’s events will once again be based in Jedburgh, host town for the tenth year running with the addition of a new Rally HQ in the newly refurbished Town Hall next to the start in Abbey Place. The rally will have 45 stage miles in 5 stages with a road mileage of 95; all cars in up to 1600cc, 2.0 litre 8 valves and Historics will run at the front of the field

Richard and Edwin Cook made the most of their prize drive in Steve Petch’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 that they got for winning the 2008 S G Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship, by taking maximum points in the first round of the 2009 championship on the Cartersport Jack Frost Stages at Croft. The early stages were very slippy with many spins, the surface dried out in the cold wind until the last two stages when the rain arrived.
Richard and Edwin were in the top six overall all day but two fast times on the last two stages pulled them up to 4th at the finish, this is one place higher than they got with their 2007 prize drive in last years Jack Frost Stages. The battle for 2nd place points was close all day with Kev Dunn/Alison Woodcock (Subaru Impreza) and Alistair Hutchinson/ St John Dykes (Renault Clio) only being separated by seconds all day. Hutchinson/Dykes edged out a same gap on the 6th stage but on the final dark stage Dunn/Woodcock pulled back 15 seconds to win the battle by one second. Second place co-drivers points was taken by Giles Dykes, St John’s brother, who was in with John Deegan, and who finished one place above Dunn/Woodcock in 8th overall.
The next 4 championship places were taken by competitors in the highly competitive 1600cc class, Des Campbell/James Braithwaite (Peugeot 206) were inside the top 15 all day, and only lost the overall 1600cc award on a tie breaker. Second 1600cc championship competitors were Barry and Michael Lindsay (Peugeot 106) who after a slow started pulled up the leader board to finish 16th overall. The 3rd and 4th 1600cc competitors were the Vauxhall Corsa’s of Geoff Harkness/Caroline Lodge and Kev Monaghan/Chris Purvis who were only 2 seconds apart at the finish.
In the other class Martin Breen/Simon Graham (Peugeot 106) led home Andrew and Reg Irving (Peugeot 205). Mark and Matthew Thompson (Peugeot 206) finished second in the 2000cc class, behind Hutchinson/Dykes, despite attacking a straw bale chicane on the first stage leaving their Peugeot looking very second hand. The over 2000cc class was won by Geoff Wilson/Sean O’Neill (Ford Escort MkII) despite spinning over the line on one stage and inflicting panel damage against a wooden fence.
The current points standing is:-
Drivers Co Driver
Richard Cook – 20 pts Edwin Cook – 20 pts
Kev Dunn – 15 pts Giles Dykes – 15 pts
Alistair Hutchinson – 12 pts Alison Woodcock – 12 pts
Des Campbell – 10 pts St John Dykes – 10 pts
