Tyneside Stages Results
For round seven of the 2008 SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship competitors made the first of 3 visits to the Otterburn Ranges, weather ranged from dry to damp to dry to torrential downpours with rivers running over the stages.
Richard and Edwin Cook (Vauxhall Astra) followed up their maximum score on the Jim Clark Reivers Rally to take their third maximum of the year. This was an excellent result for the Cooks who ran with the 4WD cars all day and only lost out on 2nd overall on a tie breaker, this was despite a misfire that limited them to 5000 rpm.
An excellent drive by Barry and Michael Lindsay (Peugeot 106) netted them 2nd place points and 6th overall, they were spurred on with having Richard Cook starting 30 secs behind them on each stage, until the inevitable happened on the 13.5 mile 10th stage when Richard caught them near the finish. Adam Bradford took 3rd place co-drivers points while co-driving for David Conley (Hillman Avenger BRM), this was despite having a stage maximum on the 5th stage. Geoff Wilson (Ford Escort Mk2) with another different co-driver, Simon Martin this time, had a clean run to 9th overall and 3rd place points.
William Jarman/Mark Fisher (Escort Cosworth) were competing on the Otterburn Ranges for the first time and had a very mixed day with good times interspersed with problems, a puncture on one stage and a 360 deg spin into a field at the start of the last stage after aquaplaning on standing water were two of their problems. Michael Davison/Luke Tait (Vauxhall Nova) had a steady run to 5th, as did Sian Beaty/ Julianne Antrobus (Ford KA) to 6th after a time query had been sorted out. Kevin Monaghan/ Chris Purvis (Vauxhall Corsa) were in 4th place after the 3rd stages but a broken throttle cable at the start of the 4th stage put them out.
To demonstrate the strength of competitors in the SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship 3 of the classes on the Tyneside stages were won by SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship competitors.
In the overall Drivers standings Richard Cook now leads on 60 pts, with William Jarman 15 pts behind, with Carl Tuer and Marcus Noble tied in 3rd on 42 pts.
In the Co-Drivers standings Edwin Cook is on 60 pts with Mark Fisher and Rob Tuer tied on 45 pts with Helen Hall 4th on 42 pts.
There is now a 2 month break until the next round, the Pendragon Stages on the 24th August, regs should be available soon on the rally website, www.pendragonstages.co.uk.
Then it is into the forest at Hamsterley on the 14th September for the Tour of Hamsterley, regs will be available soon at www.tourofhamsterley.co.uk

Jim Clark Reivers Rally
For round six of the 2008 SG Petch ANECCC Stage Rally Championship competition moved from the forests to the closed roads of the Scottish Borders for the Jim Clark Reivers Rally, this popular event had over 150 entries for 100 spaces. For the first time this year there wasn’t a new winner, with 2007 champion and first round winners Richard and Edwin Cook (Vauxhall Astra) taking maximum points.
After the first stage William Jarman/Mark Fisher (Escort Cosworth) with their new anti-roll bar working well led by 7 secs with Richard and Edwin Cook second and Carl and Rob Tuer (MGZR) a further 0.1 secs behind in third. Stage two was all change with Carl and Rob Tuer taking the lead with an impressive 21st fastest overall, William Jarman/Mark Fisher retired with mechanical problems and Richard and Edwin Cook dropped time when a misfire set in, after a slow start in stage one Marcus Noble/Helen Hall (Ford Escort Mk2) had a much better run and moved into 3rd. By second service after 3 stages Carl and Rob Tuer were leading by over 50 secs from Richard and Edwin Cook and Marcus Noble/Helen Hall.
Second run through Leitholm saw Carl and Rob retiring in spectacular style when a wheel stud sheared causing the car to spin into a roll, they managed to clear the hedge coming to rest in the field out of sight from the road, fortunately there were no injuries, this mishap can be viewed on You Tube. Richard and Edwin Cook were yellow flagged on both stages 4 and 5 and received nominal times which allowed Marcus and Helen to close to 2.5 secs behind with one stage remaining. On the last stage Richard and Edwin set a time 1.6 secs faster than Marcus and Helen to take maximum points by 4.1 secs.
Geoff Wilson (Ford Escort Mk2) with a stand in co-driver, who’s name I haven’t got had a steady run to take 3rd place points, Kev Monaghan/Chris Purvis in their reshelled Vauxhall Corsa had a few close calls, including a broken engine mounting, to take 4th place points. Last ANECCC finisher was myself with Alistair on the notes for the first time in our F1000 Nissan Micra, we had a thoroughly enjoyable day to finish 67th overall and 2nd in class 2.
The overall Drivers standings are now very close with Carl Tuer and Marcus Noble tied on 42 pts, with Richard Cook on 40 pts, and William Jarman on 35 pts. In the Co-Drivers standings Rob Tuer is on 45 pts with Helen Hall second on 42 pts with Edwin Cook on 40pts and Mark fisher on 35 pts.
Unfortunately a second championship round has been lost with the cancellation of the Turnbull Trophy due to military actions, therefore there is a 2 month break between the Tyneside Stages in June and the Pendragon Stages in August.
The regs for round 7 of the championship, the Tyneside Stages on the 22nd June are now available on the rally website at www.tynesidestages.co.uk
For those competitors who want to fill this summer gap regs for West Cumbria Motorsport Club’s Greystoke Stages on the 13th July, are available at www.Greystokestages.co.uk , and for the 1400cc competitors regs for the 1400 Only Lion Stages on 9th August are also available at www.lionstages.co.uk
